Royston Ladies Golf Club - Easter Am Am

The Royston Ladies held their annual event on Tuesday 19th March this year, with 17 teams of keen, lady golfers from Counties near by, competing in the Easter competition. The overall winners were the team from March, who won vouchers and a primrose plant but there were plenty of prizes for all - including hunt the eggs out on the course while playing, which back at the Clubhouse became 3 Creme Eggs.

Organising the event this year had been causing much concern due to the constant rainy weather and it was at the last minute almost that we could finally state the players would be allowed to use trolleys and buggies where needed. Fortunately the day remained dry and even with the winds, many golfers found they were warm enough after walking up and down our hilly course.

In the morning the players were warmly welcomed by some of the Ladies Section, who had decorated the Clubhouse with rabbits and Spring flowers throughout, as they arrived for their coffee and biscuit to begin the day. The Royston Ladies, two of whom were in costume, had organised a beautiful raffle, the proceeds of which will go to the Lady Captain’s Charity - Letchworth Garden House Hospice. In addition there was the opportunity to buy the latest women’s golf clothing from Glenmuir.

At the tee boxes were the Men’s Captain and Past Captain to start the teams off and a very impressively stocked complimentary Halfway House was waiting for them on the 9th. As always, the Royston Ladies had excelled in order to make the day enjoyable and positive for the visitors.

The competition was followed by a traditional Easter meal - Roast Turkey dinner with Chocolate Fondant dessert and the Prize giving.

Everyone felt it had been a very successful day and there were many compliments shared about the delicious meal, the lightening fast greens and the warm, friendly faces.

Several teams are already looking forward to joining us next year - Tuesday 15th April 2025.

The Final Events of 2023 at Royston Golf Club

Following the AGM at the beginning of November, Keith Taylor - Men’s Captain, Kim Bradfield - Ladies’ Captain and Ian Dell - Senior Men’s Captain, successfully performed their Drive In off the edge of the Putting Green, next to the Clubhouse. They had most sensibly warmed up before hand by playing in the Sunday Morning Competition but despite this, the occasion still proved to be very nerve wracking as driving off became even more challenging, with the increasing gusty winds. Though the Drives were perhaps shorter than hoped for, afterwards they all went in to enjoy a delicious Sunday Roast Dinner with family and friend s.

Christmas then started on the first Saturday in December with our Turkey Trot. This is a mixed foursomes competition with Raffle and Prizes appropriate to the season. It is a very popular format at RGC and brings out the dreaded Christmas Jumpers but also some good cheer on the 10th - in the form of very welcome snacks and spirits. After the game everyone came along for our first Christmas Dinner of the year. Needless to say there were many others during the month. The Men’s Captain, Keith only managed to eat 8 Chr istmas Din ners at the Club this year.

The Ladies also held their own Christmas Dinner during December which was well supported, lively and great fun. The evening started with the sharing of gifts and pulling crackers which seemed to light up the atmosphere instantly.

The Annual Car

ol Evening with the Royston Town Band was no doubt the most favourite evening of the Season for so many members. From start to finish there was not a moment to sit back. Everyone enjoyed singing the Traditional C arols and interacting with the songs, by swaying or jumping up as was appropriate. It has become the ‘go to’ event of the year and we almost cannot wait for next December again.

Finally, the last event of the year was the New Year’s Eve Party. We were so lucky to have Thomas Huttlestone, one of our own members, singing and playing his trumpet for us throughout the evening. Then following a beautiful meal in a very glamorously, decorated setting, Captains Keith and Kim led the way onto the Dance Floor. Once the dancing began, everyone soon joined in and didn’t stop until well after midnight. It was a wonderful evening to celebrate the end of 2023 and to start 2024.

Earlier in 2023:

The Ladies had a very successful Invitation Day on Tuesday 22nd August.

24 players from various clubs participated in teams of 4.

The winners were Helen Steverson, Liz Slaughter and their guests, on count back from Kim Bradfield, Wendy Hallums and their guests.

There were 2 Nearest the Pin prizes on Holes 6 and 16 - both won by guests.

It was a beautiful day and lovely to hear great compliments about our Course and the delicious Afternoon Tea.

The Ladies’ Club Championship

Royston Ladies competed in their annual Club Championship Competition over the weekend, playing 36 holes in glorious weather over the 2 days for the Championship Trophy and the Bronze Trophy [dependent on handicap]. Whilst it was very challenging, it was also wonderful to see some of our new members participating and enjoying getting involved in the event.

Following the competition the ladies were treated to cake, biscuits and Prosecco, which was kindly donated by our Chef Julie and the Lady Captain Sue Bidwell - who sadly had to pull out after the First Round.

Our overnight leaders, Tracey Parsons and Chris Dewhurst, were both unable to retain their lead into the final round.

The Runner Up prize went to Tracey Parsons [gross 191]

And the Best Nett prize went to Steph Denton [nett 157]

Secondly, the Bronze Trophy winner Helen Steverson [gross 213] alongside Kim and Sandra.

The Runner Up prize went to Annette Copeland [gross 213]

And the Best Nett prize went to Kim Bradfield [nett 157]

It was a very successful event which ran smoothly with all the competition input from Sandra Williams and Sandy Griffin.

The Bowen Cup remains at Royston for another year!

The annual match for the Bowen Cup, between Royston and Saffron Walden Ladies, took place on Thursday 7th September at Saffron Walden Golf Club.

A total of 36 ladies, 18 from each club, played in this stroke play game for the prestigious trophy.

The well deserved winner was Sandy Griffin, who played a remarkable round of golf in the September heatwave, scoring a nett 72.

At the same time the 2 Clubs were playing for the Dorothy Johnson Team Trophy, which the Royston Ladies retained this year again, as the scores resulted in a draw overall.

The Jean Wilkinson Inter Club County Competition came to a conclusion on
Thursday 28th September.
In the early stages the Clubs played their group matches both at Home and
Away before the winners went on to compete in the Semi Finals and Finals Day
at St Neots.
This is a matchplay competition for 5 players and uses a squad of players
and Caddies during the earlier rounds.
The Semi Finalists were Brampton Park v Cambridge Country Club and Royston v
Ramsey.
The morning Semi Finals were played in good golfing conditions and saw
Cambridge Country Club and Royston beating their opponents. Following a
quick lunch break the 2 remaining Clubs went out again to complete a second
round in the day.
As expected the matches were very close but after going to the 19th hole in
the last match, Royston won.
The Royston ladies were delighted to be presented with the magnificent Jean
Wilkinson Trophy.
